Crassula ovata, commonly known as the Jade Plant, Money Tree, or Friendship Tree, is one of the most popular and easy-to-care-for succulents. Native to South Africa and Mozambique, it is a slow-growing, woody-stemmed shrub that can eventually reach 3–6 feet in height if grown indoors, or even taller when planted outdoors in ideal conditions. The plant has thick, glossy, oval-shaped leaves that are a deep green and may take on a reddish tint along the edges when exposed to bright sunlight. Crassula ovata produces small, star-shaped white or pink flowers, though it typically flowers when the plant is more mature and well-established.
This resilient and ornamental succulent is famous for its ability to thrive in a variety of environments, and it's often associated with good luck, prosperity, and wealth in various cultures.
Propagation:
Crassula ovata can be propagated from leaf cuttings, stem cuttings, or offshoots.
-
Stem Cuttings:
- The easiest and most common method of propagation for Jade Plants is through stem cuttings.
- Select a healthy, mature stem with a few leaves attached. Using a sharp, clean knife or scissors, cut the stem just below a node (where the leaves join the stem).
- Allow the cutting to dry for 1–2 days, allowing the cut end to callous over. This helps prevent rot.
- Once the cutting is calloused, place it in a well-draining cactus mix or succulent soil. You can also place it in water to root, but soil is preferred for better long-term growth.
- Water sparingly, and place the cutting in bright, indirect light. The cutting should root in 2–4 weeks.
-
Leaf Cuttings:
- To propagate via leaf cuttings, simply remove a healthy leaf from the plant by gently twisting it off the stem.
- Allow the leaf to dry for a couple of days until the cut end has calloused.
- After callousing, place the leaf on top of well-draining soil, and water sparingly until roots form (typically within 4–6 weeks).
-
Offsets/Offshoots:
- Jade plants can also be propagated by separating offshoots or small plants that grow around the base of the main stem. Gently pull or cut the offshoot and plant it in its own pot with well-draining soil.
Sunlight Requirement:
- Bright, Indirect Light: Crassula ovata thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight each day, especially in the morning or late afternoon. However, avoid intense midday sun, as it can scorch the leaves.
- Indoor Conditions: If growing indoors, place your jade plant near a south- or west-facing window for maximum light exposure. Insufficient light will cause the plant to become leggy and lose its compact form.
- Outdoor Conditions: If planting outdoors, Jade plants prefer a sunny spot but should be protected from intense midday heat in particularly hot climates.
Soil Preparation:
- Well-Draining Soil: As with most succulents, Crassula ovata requires soil that drains well to prevent root rot. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal, or you can make your own by adding sand or perlite to regular potting soil.
- Slightly Acidic to Neutral pH: Jade plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0.
- Outdoor Planting: When planting outdoors, ensure the soil is sandy or gritty and has excellent drainage. Avoid heavy clay soils.
Watering:
- Infrequent Watering: Jade plants are highly drought-tolerant and require infrequent watering. Overwatering is one of the most common issues that affect their health.
- Growing Season (Spring & Summer): Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Be sure to allow the excess water to drain from the pot, and never let the plant sit in water.
- Winter (Dormancy): During the fall and winter months, the jade plant goes dormant. Water sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry. In cold conditions, reduce watering to once every 3–4 weeks.
- Watering Tip: Always let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Jade plants do not like to sit in moist soil, and consistent overwatering can lead to root rot.
Propagation Recap:
- Method: Stem cuttings, leaf cuttings, or offsets
- Success Rate: High with stem cuttings
- Time to Root: 2–4 weeks for stem cuttings, 4–6 weeks for leaf cuttings
