Aloe juvenna, commonly known as Tiger Tooth Aloe, is a compact, fast-growing aloe species known for its striking triangular leaves and dense, clumping rosette formation. The leaves are green with sharp, tooth-like edges and often display reddish-brown spots when exposed to bright sunlight or drought conditions. This small aloe is perfect for containers, rock gardens, or as a decorative indoor plant. It typically grows up to 12 inches tall and produces tall spikes of tubular red or orange flowers during the summer, which attract pollinators like hummingbirds.

Propagation:

Aloe juvenna can be easily propagated through offsets (pups) or stem cuttings.

  1. Offsets (Pups):

    • This aloe produces small pups or offshoots around its base.
    • Gently separate the pup from the mother plant using a clean knife or by hand, ensuring that the offset has some roots attached.
    • Allow the pup to dry and callous over for a day or two before planting it in well-draining soil.
    • Water lightly and place it in bright, indirect light. The pup will root in 2–4 weeks.
  2. Stem Cuttings:

    • Aloe juvenna’s stems grow in a stacked, branching pattern. You can take a cutting from a healthy stem and allow it to dry and callous for a few days.
    • Once calloused, plant the cutting in a succulent soil mix and water sparingly until roots develop, typically within 3–4 weeks.

Sunlight Requirement:

  • Full Sun to Partial Shade: Aloe juvenna thrives in bright light. It prefers full sun, which brings out its reddish coloring, but it can also tolerate partial shade. It should receive at least 4–6 hours of sunlight per day for optimal growth.
  • When grown indoors, place the plant near a sunny window. In low-light conditions, the plant may stretch and lose its compact form.

Soil Preparation:

  • Well-Draining Soil: Like most succulents, Aloe juvenna requires well-draining soil to avoid water retention and root rot. Use a succulent or cactus potting mix, or create your own by mixing regular potting soil with coarse sand or perlite.
  • If planting outdoors, ensure the soil is sandy or rocky and doesn't stay wet after rain.

Watering:

  • Minimal Watering: Aloe juvenna is drought-tolerant and doesn't need frequent watering. During the growing season (spring to summer), water the plant thoroughly but let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
  • In winter, reduce watering to once every 3–4 weeks, as the plant will enter dormancy. Overwatering can cause root rot, so it’s best to err on the side of underwatering.

Propagation Recap:

  • Method: Offsets (pups) or stem cuttings
  • Success Rate: High with both methods
  • Time to Root: 2–4 weeks for both pups and stem cuttings
